When To Use Antihistamines

Antihistamines are medications that help relieve the effects of histamine, a chemical released by the immune system during allergic reactions. They are commonly used to treat various conditions, such as seasonal and perennial allergies, as well as urticaria (hives). It's essential to select the appropriate type of antihistamine and to understand when to use them to ensure maximum safety and effectiveness.

Seasonal and Perennial Allergies (Allergic Rhinitis)

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis include sneezing, a runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, and nasal congestion. Second-generation antihistamines, such as fexofenadine, cetirizine, and loratadine, are ideal for treating these symptoms because they are long-lasting and do not cause drowsiness.

Skin Allergies & Hives (Urticaria)

Urticaria (hives) presents as a skin rash with raised red patches and itchy bumps. These welts can appear anywhere on the body, most commonly on the arms, legs, and trunk. Antihistamines are effective in relieving the discomfort associated with hives.

Motion Sickness And Nausea

Symptoms of travel sickness can include a feeling of discomfort in your upper abdomen, nausea, dizziness, vomiting and a headache. Phenergan, an antiemetic antihistamine containing the active ingredient Promethazine hydrochloride can help prevent and treat nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness. Please be aware that Promethazine can cause drowsiness.

Insomnia

Some antihistamines containing Diphenhydramine and promethazine can cause drowsiness; these may be used to treat difficulties with falling or staying asleep. They are intended for short-term use only.
