It is usual for children to get several colds a year. As they get older, their immunity builds up and and they get fewer colds. Most colds will get better within a few days and you may not need to do more than keep your child comfortable until they get over it.
Fever: If they are feverish, give them plenty of fluids to drink. their temperature may be lowered with a suitable medicine which has doses for children. For further advice, talk to your healthcare professional.
Coughs: Although it can be distressing to hear your child cough, in fact this helps to clear phlegm from the chest and mucus from the nose. Give your child plenty of warm clear fluids.
How you can help?
You can help by keeping your child warm and giving them plenty of fluids. At night-time make sure the bedroom is well ventilated, but not cold or draughty.
Q: What changes are taking place?
A: The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has advised that cough and cold medicines with certain active ingredients should no longer be labelled for use in children under 6 and medicines with certain combinations of active ingredients will be available for use in children 6 and above up until March 2010, but after this date they will no longer be labelled for use in children under 12.

A: Fever and high temperatures: treat with 'anti-pyretics' i.e.
ibuprofen or
paracetamol. (NB Follow the directions on pack. Paracetamol is not for children under two months. Ibuprofen is not for children under 3 months.)
Coughs: use a soothing cough mixture containing glycerol and for children aged 1 year and above honey and lemon.
Congestion/blocked nose: vapour rubs, saline drops and inhalant decongestants can be used to help make breathing easier.
