Signs of Dehydration and How to Treat It

Signs of Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it consumes, leading to an imbalance in your body's hydration levels. This can happen due to various factors, including excessive sweating, prolonged exposure to hot weather, inadequate fluid intake, illness (such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, diabetes), and certain medications that promote fluid loss. Common signs include:

Mild to Moderate Dehydration:

  • Thirst -Feeling unusually thirsty is an early sign.
  • Dark yellow urine - Healthy urine should be light in colour; dark yellow suggests dehydration.
  • Less frequent urination - Not urinating as often as usual.
  • Dry mouth & lips- A sticky or dry feeling in the mouth.
  • Fatigue & weakness- Feeling tired, sluggish, or dizzy.
  • Headache - Lack of fluids can trigger headaches.
  • Dry skin - Less elasticity in the skin (pinching the skin results in slow recoil).

Severe dehydration (Seek Medical Help Immediately):

  • Rapid heartbeat & breathing
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Sunken eyes
  • No Urination for Several Hours
  • Fainting or severe weakness

How to Treat Dehydration

Mild to Moderate Dehydration:
  • Drink fluids - Water is best, but oral rehydration solutions (ORS), such as Dioralyte, can help restore electrolytes.
  • Avoid caffeine & alcohol - These can worsen dehydration.
  • Eat water-rich foods, such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges and soups.
  • Take Small, Frequent Sips - If feeling nauseous, drink small amounts regularly rather than large gulps, ice lollies can also be a good option too.

Severe dehydration:

  • Seek urgent medical help - You may need IV fluids if dehydration is severe.
  • Hospital treatment may be required - Especially for infants, elderly individuals, or those with underlying health conditions.
