Ortho-Creme contraceptive cream is to be used alongside a barrier method of contraception, such as a condom or vaginal diaphragm, to prevent pregnancy. The active ingredient is nonoxynol-9 2% w/w.

Spermicidal contraceptives such as Ortho-Creme will kill any sperm that may get round the diaphragm and so will provide more effective contraception.

Use:
The cream should be spread evenly over the inner surface of the diaphragm which will be in contact with the cervix. It should also be spread on the outside rim to prevent any sperm from getting past the edge.
The diaphragm should be put in place inside the vagina before intercourse and left there for at least six to eight hours after sexual intercourse. If you have sexual intercourse again during this time, you must first apply more Ortho-Creme or another spermicide without removing the diaphragm.

You should not use this product:
If you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in Ortho-Creme; or if you are paraplegic, quadriplegic or have no sensation in the vagina for any other reason.

Special warnings:
Spermicidal contraceptives such as Ortho-Creme are intended for use with a barrier method of contraception. They do not provide a high degree of contraceptive protection when used alone. Where avoidance of pregnancy is essential, you should talk to your doctor or family planning clinic about the most appropriate method of contraception for you.
