The yellow colouration in the macula comes from 3 carotenoids 'LMZ3': zeaxanthin, lutein and meso-zeaxanthin. These plant compounds help protect the eye by absorbing blue light, which is present in office computer screens and regular sunlight. Because the macula is yellow in colour it absorbs damaging blue light that enters the eye and so acts as a natural filter.
