How Antacids Work

image How Antacids Work

Antacids are over-the-counter (OTC) medicines used to neutralise stomach acid. They're commonly used to relieve Heartburn, Indigestion, Acid reflux, and Sour stomach (also known as dyspepsia or Indigestion).
They offer fast, on-the-spot relief by elevating the pH levels of stomach contents, providing the comfort you need.

How Antacids Work

Antacids are alkaline compounds that interact with hydrochloric acid (HCl) present in the stomach, effectively neutralising it. This reaction helps alleviate irritation in both the stomach lining and the oesophagus, providing relief from the uncomfortable sensations of burning and discomfort often associated with acid-related issues. By balancing the acidity, antacids help restore a sense of calm to the digestive tract, allowing individuals to experience greater ease and comfort.

Common Ingredients Used In Antacids

  • Calcium carbonate is an effective ingredient found in products like Rennie and Bisodol, known for their strong and fast-acting relief.
  • Sodium bicarbonate is found in products like Alka-Seltzer and Gaviscon, which provide rapid but short-lived relief.
  • Alginate Products such as Peptac and Acidex create a protective barrier that effectively helps prevent acid reflux.
  • Aluminium hydroxide Pepto Bismol offers slower but longer-lasting relief.
