Yves Saint Laurent Opium For Women

Launched in 1977 Opium, arguably the most successful fragrance from Yves Saint Laurent, has grown to become an era defining scent; as quintessentially 80's as shoulder pads, yuppies and pop tracks with sax solos.

Even before you smell this scent the name conjures a sense of the hedonistic, opium a highly addictive drug emblematic of 80s excesses. If by some neat advancement of technology we finally do get around to inventing 'Smellyvision' there's bound to be ubiquitous whiffs of Opium to accompany scenes of 80's power-dressing female leads.

Like so many perfumes from the 70's and 80's, Opium has become all about nostalgia for women who took this on as their first 'grown up' scent and now seek it out to recapture those heady days. It is perhaps because of this that Yves Saint Laurent decided to re-release the original formula in 2013 after a rather poorly received redesign in 2009.

In terms of construction there is a list of accords to Opium as extensive as it's room-melting silage. Changeable in mood and aroma, there's a varied palette of florals, fruits, herbal and wood notes, tied together with a strong smoky incense accent and flavourful spices that give Opium it's considered title of an oriental fragrance.

In a world now where fashion cycles through retro with increasing velocity, there is perhaps a place for Opium amongst the younger generation wishing to get the scent to go with the look. Yves Saint Laurent may well have missed the party however as the current trend at the time of writing is more for 90's anti-fashion than 80's ostentation. Stick with it though Yves the 80's will probably be back in again in a few years.
