Donna Karan founded her company in 1984, 'to design modern clothes for modern people' her first collection was released the following year. Finding inspiration from simplicity Karan gained considerable fame for her 'Essentials' line where seven pieces could be combined in different ways to form a series of outfits.

Going on to design less expensive clothing ranges for younger men and women under her DKNY label, Karan began releasing perfumes in 1992 in association with Estee Lauder. To date over 90 perfumes have been released under the Donna Karan and DKNY labels with a recent resurgence for her discontinued 1990s perfume lines which were re-released in 2008.
