What's the prostate screening test for?

A Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein that is generated by the cells in the prostate gland. It appears in the bloodstream and shows in higher concentrations when the gland is enlarged or cancerous. This test is quick to do and only requires a few drops of blood. In 10 minutes you will be able to see if there are high levels of PSA in the blood. If these results are positive, the next step is to visit your GP to discuss your results and next course of action.

About the test...

This test measures the level of PSA in the blood. A tiny blood sample is all that is needed to detect PSA. Raised PSA (above 4ng/ml) can be an early indicator of enlargement of the prostate, prostatitis, urinary infection or prostate cancer. This test can provide indication of a pre-clinical condition before any symptoms develop.

This test is a home test and will not need posting to obtain the results. It takes only 10 minutes for a result to appear once the buffer solution has been added.
